One day at a time

One day at a time he said,

and it all stood still,

her dreams of  tomorrow together,

and memories of a now distant past.

One day at a time he said,

she wistfully smiled it away,

she wished for it a nightmare to be,

and something that wouldn’t last.

One day at a time he said,

she hoped he meant just life,

some philosophy of moments,

or one with some wisdom infinite.

One day at a time he said,

and then she heard it right,

it was all her being that was a moment of a day.

Her smiles and laughter were his,

and sadness hers to keep,

it was an arrangement of convenience,

with a day that ended at his beep.

She held out her hand,

and hoped he would hold her tight,

and when he didn’t budge,

she needed not to fight.

One day at a time,

she was a moments covenience,

a noiseless windchime of wishes,

she knew it was her decline.
